Candid is not the same as shooting from the hip. Shooting from the hip is a physical technique — camera at waist height, not looking through the viewfinder. Candid is a philosophy: you are present, your camera is visible, but your subject does not know they are being photographed at that moment.

The distinction matters. You can shoot candidly through a viewfinder, at eye level, with a normal shooting posture. The key is timing and behaviour, not camera position. Move like you belong. Shoot without hesitation or announcement. The decisive moment is lost the instant someone becomes aware of the camera.
